Visit Hardelot Castle: The Jewel of the Opal Coast
Visit Hardelot Castle, a Journey into the Coastal History of Pas-de-Calais
Hardelot Castle is one of the iconic sites of the Opal Coast. This manor has a rich historical heritage! It was Philippe Hurepel, Count of Boulogne, who built this fortified castle with its 10 towers. In 1615, the building was besieged at the request of the Catholic Marie de Medici, leaving the castle in ruins.
Today, visiting Hardelot Castle offers a true immersion into history. Among the medieval ruins, you will not only discover fully reconstructed rooms but also a collection of rare objects that symbolize Franco-British culture. These items are loaned from various museums, such as the Louvre, the Musée de l’Armée, and the Boulogne-sur-Mer Museum.
Franco-British relations have always been facilitated by the geographical proximity of the Opal Coast and England. From the coastline, it’s not uncommon to see the English shores. Additionally, in 1897, the castle was purchased by a Briton, John Robinson Whitley. This further strengthened the already close ties between the French and the British.
In recent years, Hardelot Castle has undergone many improvements to ensure everyone can enjoy serene and beautiful walks.
Stroll Through the British-Inspired Gardens of Hardelot Castle
Do you enjoy landscaped parks and outdoor strolls? Then the gardens of Hardelot are sure to delight your senses!
Flanked by the impressive walls of the fortified castle, exploring the castle gardens guarantees a botanical experience that is both refreshing, serene, and filled with gentle floral scents. With the waves of Hardelot-Plage nearby, their poetry captivates you. Indeed, the careful blend of English and French gardening art gives the Hardelot gardens a unique atmosphere. Flower meadows, an organic vegetable garden, and an educational pond await you!
Are you a flora and fauna enthusiast? Each season, the gardens are reborn. Every spring, the gardening team renews the plantings. Rare species are thus showcased for visitors. Additionally, the creation of natural spaces fosters a rich biodiversity: wildlife is more abundant. Along your path, you might spot a hedgehog or even a green tree frog!
The art of gardening, combined with respect for nature and the environment, forms the foundation of the gardens at Hardelot Castle. From April to the end of November, themed workshops (gardening, floral painting, etc.) and guided tours are regularly offered.
Good news! If kept on a leash, you can bring your four-legged companion along.
Take a walk in the heart of the Condette Marsh Nature Reserve
Looking for an escape and a change of scenery? There’s nothing better for recharging than connecting with nature! France boasts stunning landscapes, and the Condette Marsh is one of them. Located on the edge of the Hardelot forest, you can take the walking trails and enjoy the fresh air!
If you keep your eyes open during your walk, you might come across some fascinating encounters. This protected area is home to:
- nearly 400 plant species;
- 25 mammal species;
- no fewer than 110 bird species;
- 10 amphibian species.
Are you an ornithology enthusiast? Don’t forget to bring a pair of binoculars!
Interestingly, people often refer to it as Hardelot Castle. However, we should actually call it the “Condette Castle” because it was built on its lands. Classified as a regional natural reserve, the Condette Marsh hasn’t always existed. In the past, counts and their noble guests enjoyed hunting there. However, over time, the dunes advanced and closed the border between the Becque d’Hardelot, a river in Pas-de-Calais, and the sea. This is how the marsh was formed.
The marsh has been fully rehabilitated to welcome walkers and hikers. The walking trail is perfectly safe for your children. However, note that bringing your dog is not allowed.
