Why Cap Gris-Nez?

Historically, “Cap Gris-Nez” is the French translation of the name given in Old Flemish, “Grisenesse,” which literally means “Gray Cape.” Don’t be mistaken!
The name of the Deux-Caps cliffs was not chosen randomly. It refers to the color of each rock. The cliffs of Cap Blanc-Nez are made of chalk, hence the name “Blanc-Nez.” In contrast, the sandstone of Cap Gris-Nez gives the cliffs their grayish tone.
