With friends, with family, for a birthday or a work away-day, go-karting is the activity that asks for nothing: no skill level, no gear, no weather requirements. That's what makes it the coast's safe bet when the wind is too strong for sand yachting and it's raining too hard for the beach.
Three tracks share the Opal Coast and its hinterland: one covered, two outdoors. The choice between them isn't about price but about what you're after.
Indoor or outdoor: what really changes
- The covered track It runs whatever the weather, which is decisive here. The tracks are shorter and tighter: lots of turns, lots of braking, and it's very loud. This is the format that works with children and for a first time.
- Outdoors The tracks are longer, speeds higher, and the karts often more powerful. It's closer to what you picture when you say "circuit". But a wet track changes everything, and a session can be cancelled.
From what age
Each track sets its own rules, but the practice on this coast is the same as elsewhere: children's karts from around 7 or 8, two-seat karts letting a younger child ride with an adult, and adult karts from 14 or 16 depending on power.
Height decides as much as age, because you need to reach the pedals. A phone call before making the trip avoids disappointment in the car park.
What to bring
- Closed, flat shoes: no flip-flops, no thick soles
- Hair tied back, and nothing dangling — scarf, cord, hood
- A disposable balaclava is often provided, or sold on site
- A booking, especially at weekends and during school holidays
- Something to pass the time: you drive for ten to fifteen minutes, and wait for the rest
How much time to allow
A session lasts ten to fifteen minutes. In practice, with check-in, the briefing, kitting up and waiting between heats, allow a good hour and a half on site for two sessions — and half a day if you're coming with several cars.
It's the sum that surprises people most: karting is sold by the session, but lived by the half-day.
