It's rarely what you come to the Opal Coast looking for — and yet it's what you end up doing, when there are eight of you, it's been raining for two days, and no one fancies a fourth museum.

The two activities look similar from a distance and come down to just two criteria: the age of the youngest player, and the group's tolerance for bruises.

Which to choose

  • Laser tag Indoors, no impact, suitable from around seven or eight. Short fifteen-minute games, back to back. It's the family option, and the rainy-day option.
  • Paintball Outdoors, on wooded terrain. The pellets sting and leave bruises: it's for teenagers and adults, and you say so beforehand, not partway through.
  • Soft-pellet paintball The version for younger players, no pain and no stains. This is what venues offering children's birthday parties provide.

Organising a game with a group

Prices are nearly always discounted beyond about ten players, and slots for a private group are booked in advance. That's what makes it a popular choice for a stag or hen do or a work away-day: the price per person drops as the group grows, which is unusual.

For paintball, bring clothes you don't mind ruining: the suits provided protect you, they don't cover everything.
