The seaside resorts on this coast were born in the 19th century out of a medical idea: sea air and seawater heal. Sea bathing at Le Touquet and Wimereux began as a prescription before it became a pastime.
Thalassotherapy is the direct heir of that idea, and it keeps one edge over the city spa: it uses seawater pumped offshore and warmed, not tap water with salt added.
Thalasso, spa, balneotherapy: not the same thing
- Thalassotherapy Seawater, seaweed and marine mud, under supervision. The term is regulated: an establishment using it must pump seawater on site.
- The spa Wellness and relaxation, with no obligation to use seawater. Sauna, hammam, massages. This is what most resort hotels offer.
- Balneotherapy Treatments using warm, agitated water in a pool. Often an amenity within a spa rather than a stand-alone place.
When to go
Out of season, without hesitation. The appeal of a thalasso on this coast is being warm in the water while the wind blows outside: it's a November-to-March experience, not a July one.
Multi-day courses get booked well ahead, taster half-days far less so. For a first try, a half-day is enough to know if the format suits you.
With a group
It's a format that works well for a hen do or a work away-day: several establishments will privatise time slots. The real constraint is the number of treatment-room spaces — beyond ten people, you need to book early.
