It stands at the mouth of the Slack, on a rock the sea surrounds at high tide. Fort d'Ambleteuse was built in 1680 to protect a military harbour Louis XIV wanted to dig here, facing England. The harbour never really came to exist; the fort is still standing.
It's the most photographed image of the Opal Coast after the two capes, and one of the easiest to see: just walk down onto the beach.
What to know as you look at it
Its horseshoe shape, open towards the land, isn't decorative: it let cannon sweep the roadstead while staying protected on the landward side. Vauban reworked it after an earlier build was judged too weak.
Napoleon reused it for his Boulogne camp, when the army meant to invade England was stationed all along this coast. It then served as a landmark, a ruin, and finally a historic monument — restored by an association since the 1960s.
How to reach it
At low tide, you walk out to its base across the sand. At high tide, the water surrounds it: that's when it's most photogenic, and when you don't get close.
The interior can only be visited during occasional openings run by the association that maintains it — heritage weekends, summer weekends. The rest of the time it's seen from outside, which is already the essential part.
